Prefecture of Serres
The Prefecture of Serres is rich in history, starting from Mythic times and through a centuries-old route. The fame of the monuments, sights and areas of exceptional beauty have exceeded the boundaries of the prefecture and are well-known throughout Greece. The ski centre, Ano Porroia with its mountainous clean air as well as the cave of the region are unique and worth visiting.
Amphipolis
Amphipolis founded by the Macedonian Hedon, was conquered in 430 e.g. by the Athenians from the general Agnonas. In 424 B.C. Brasidas, an officer of ancient Sparta, marching from Chalkidiki to Amphipolis, easily conquered the city. Two years later, in 422 B.C., the campaign of the Athenian demagogue Cleon, with a considerable force, failed to wrest the city from the influence of the Lacedaemonians. It was recovered from the Athenians by the treaty of Nikiai, remaining essentially free until 357 BC when it was captured by Philip II of Macedonia. It continued to be an important city of the Roman and Byzantine empire that declined historically and even physically during the Middle Ages.
