Amphipolis, founded by the Macedonian Edonians, was conquered in 430 BC by the Athenians under the general Hagnon. In 424 BC Brasidas, an officer of ancient Sparta, easily captured the city, advancing from Chalkidiki. Despite the campaign of the Athenian demagogue Cleon in 422 BC, the city remained under Spartan influence. It was returned to the Athenians under the Peace of Nicias and remained free until 357 BC, when it was taken by Philip II of Macedon. Amphipolis remained an important city under the Roman and Byzantine empires, but declined in the Middle Ages.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Ennea Hodoi (Nine Roads) was a city of the Edonians on the banks of the river Strymon in Macedonia, destroyed by the Athenians in a surprise attack. After the Persian Wars, in 437\/6 BC, the Athenian state decided to take over the gold-rich area, driving out its inhabitants to found its own colony. The Athenian general Hagnon captured, plundered and destroyed the city, driving out the survivors. In its place he founded Amphipolis.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Kasta Tomb<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In 1953, on Kasta hill, local residents dug the first trench after finding traces of stonework at the top. In 1964, under the direction of Dimitris Lazaridis, the excavation officially began, revealing a four-sided structure. K. Peristeri and M. Lefantzis discovered that the Lion of Amphipolis once stood on top of the mound. Excavations continued over an area of 20 stremmata (2 hectares), revealing 70 tombs. In 2012, archaeologist Katerina Peristeri traced the limits of the mound, with the enclosure wall lying 12 metres below the surface.<\/p>

The 497-metre burial enclosure dates to around 325\u2013300 BC, the reign of Alexander the Great, and is made of Thasian marble. It is considered the work of Deinocrates. The excavation revealed three successive chambers, with a possible fourth one. Excavations are ongoing and the identity of the deceased remains uncertain. According to Andrew Chugg, the Caryatids represent priestesses of Dionysus, linked to Olympias, the mother of Alexander. Some archaeologists argue that only the core of the tomb is Hellenistic, but the head of the excavation maintains that it dates to the last quarter of the 4th century BC.<\/p>
